Artium Gallery
The project scope is to design an art gallery for Ksenija Matkovic (1918-2004). Ksenija Matkovic was born the Countess de Cerineo, daughter of Count Dinko de Cerineo and Tinka de Cerineo, in Brac, Yugoslavia. She came to the United States from Yugoslavia with her husband, a shipping magnate, in 1940. She is the mother is June Goldfinger, Myron Goldfinger’s wife.
The location is a former sail loft near the Manhasset Bay.
The gallery features exhibitions by regional and contemporary artists like George Constant.
“Artium is an attractive, small and airy gallery in a former sail loft near Manhasset Bay at 402 Main Street. Ksenija Matkovic, the director, exhibits a diversified collection of paintings, sculpture, pottery, blown glass and graphics. The prize of her collection, however, is a group of oil paintings and drawings by George Constant.
“When I began the gallery two years ago, my things were much too sophisticated for the average person who walked in here,” Mrs. Matkovic said, “and little by little I had to become less sophisticated, although I hate to do it.”
The gallery now carries the modern vinyl creations of the Long Island artist Richard Vaux as well as the pleasant seascapes and landscapes of two Port Washington artists, Mary Blakey and Jackie Penney. Artium’s prices range from $25 for selected graphics to $3,500 or $5,000 for a large Constant. The gallery is open Tuesday to Sunday from 11 A.M. to 5 P.M.”
