NEW YORK, NY (February 28, 2024)

Curated from the private collection of Judith York Newman, American architect, educator, and owner of SPACED Gallery of Architecture, this presentation commemorates her longstanding commitment to intersecting architecture and art.

Sourced from various corners of the globe, these posters served as announcements for architectural exhibitions, lectures, and commemorative events. They span from Ivy league institutions such as Cornell, Columbia, and Yale to world renowned Museums such as RIBA Heinz, Centre Pompidou, and the Smithsonian. The posters highlight an era of diverse stylistic expressions of architects and institutions, and collectively accentuate the experimental design choices of the 1970s - 80s.

Judith York Newman, Owner of SPACED Gallery of Architecture said, “Prior to the internet, they were an important and sometimes sole-source for information about location, opening times, and special events. This selection of 40 works not only serves as a retrospective survey of graphic design but also encapsulates a pivotal moment in time before the internet age.”

“The Paul Rudolph Institute for Modern Architecture is dedicated to communicating, preserving and extending Paul Rudolph’s legacy and his belief in the importance of modern architecture and good design,” said Kelvin Dickinson, President of PRIMA. “We appreciate the opportunity to showcase the many creative ways architecture can be depicted to facilitate discussion about such a universal subject.”

About SPACED: Gallery of Architecture

SPACED: Gallery of Architecture was founded in 1976 by architect, educator, and curator, Judith York Newman. It is located on the Upper West Side in New York City, and was the first gallery in New York City devoted exclusively to architecture. It operated on and off for many years as an exhibit space for works created by architects or architecturally trained artists. The gallery featured a collection of prints and drawings encompassing more than four decades of works.
